Botox®
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, nonsurgical, medical practitioner administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe lines in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is also used for excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis).
How does it work?
When our facial muscles are used repeatedly the skin becomes creased within those areas. The ageing process slows down collagen and elastin production in the skin so as we get older those areas that are over used become damaged and its here the lines become permanent.
If we reduce movement in those areas the skin actually stops being creased and its then given time to recover, which in turn causes the lines to become softer and sometimes even fade away. When injected with Botox® these areas being treated are temporarily inactivated allowing them not be overused. The result is a softer more relaxed and pleasant appearance.
In the first few years frequent treatments (3 monthly) are required to re-educate the muscles and the more treatments that you have then requires less frequent (6 monthly) treatments until a yearly maintenance is all that you require BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by trained medical practitioners and is available only by prescription. Results may vary.
What to expect
At your initial appointment you will fill in a medical consultation form and we will answer any questions that you may have and discuss your expectations for treatment. After the initial consultation you will be told if you are a good candidate for treatment.
A further telephone medical consultation will be carried out by Dr Mark Harrison of Harley Aesthetics which is in line with guidelines set out by the NMC and MHRA and is within the law. Treatment can go ahead on the same day however if you prefer to book an alternative day then we can arrange to suit yourself. A post treatment checklist will be discussed and we will aim to see you back at the clinic within 14 days post treatment to ensure satisfaction.
On the day of the treatment you will be met with your practitioner Kristeen Gray who will treat you in a comfortable private room. No anasthetic is required however if you prefer the area to be numbed a cold pack or topical anaesthetic can be applied prior to injection. The areas to be treated will be marked out after careful examination of the muscles. The whole process takes around 10-15 min and you are ready to go back to your normal duties.
Some common side effects of treatment are temporary eyelid droop, headache, nausea, slight redness, inflammation, bruising/and or bruising at the injection sites, tenderness and localised pain. Results can be seen within days but may take the full 14 days to see effect. Results vary.
